Hmmm… what do I say at the end of the year 2006? I always love New Year’s Eve… I always ponder the things that happened the past year. I’m going to tell you the 10 biggest things in the year for me right now. Now that doesn’t mean the 10 best things… some could be great, some could be happy, some could be sorrowful, some could be hard, some could be fun… but I think these are the 10 biggest things that happened to me in 2006 (and none of these are in chronological order or order of meaning – they’re all in random order):

  • Colorado ~ My family went out West for a week of vacation; we visited family, stayed at Keystone, biked a lot, went hiking, swimming, etc… Then I met up with the youth group and we headed out to the mountains for backpacking; it was tons of fun! Especially looking at the stars, praying for angels, fishing, devotions, being with my friends, and most importantly… witnessing how great our God really is!

  • Wiky ~ Of course! I was a lot more involved than I’ve ever been, and I felt blessed by God as I used the gifts He gave me! I got to better know some of my teammates and also spread the seeds of the gospel to the kids there. I can’t wait until next year!

  • PJ’s resigning ~ This is one of those times that would be considered hard. I struggled a lot… but in the end, I think I came out stronger than before! God worked through that time immensely; He is making me into a leader, through this. And I’ve also learned patience (which I still need to learn over and over) and love (which obviously, I need to keep learning for, “love never fails.”) And I’ve found an amazing thing to help through it all – His Word! And I pray that God will continue to give me a desire to read it.

  • Bible Study ~ “You will learn more in this Bible study… than you ever will this year at your school” – Dave Ryskamp.  Wow! And who would’ve thought?! But seriously, I have learned sooooooooo much from it! And I dare to say that I’m becoming a leader through it all! Please keep praying that I will become more and more a leader after God’s own heart!

  • Hornets Soccer ~ Undefeated season! Oh Yeah! This was the best year I’ve ever had with the Hornets; it was so fun to see a bunch of benchwarmers from last year, new recruits, and some new leaders step up as this young team fought it’s way through to the best season the Hornets program has ever had! Being one of the captains, it especially exciting to see! And once again, I can’t wait until next year!

  • Benedict’s Bower ~ This was a guy’s weekend that I spent with my dad and brothers, the Millers, Moores, Friends, Johnsons, and Knights. I enjoyed fishing, kayaking, canoeing, shooting guns, giving a devotional on “love”, and just “being with the boys!” We also learned what it means to turn from a boy… to a man! Since I already went through it last time, it was cool to see my brother, Keegan, and a few others go through the thing the dad’s set up for us, while we got to help and encourage them. Another fun thing that happened was PJ’s and my bass contest! In the end, he won, 12-10!

  • Solid Ground Activities ~ That would include winter/fall retreats, Amore, Spring Fling, and like every Wed. night or SNAC! I know it’s kinda cheating to put all of those in one big group, but they were all so great! Last winter retreat, I gave my testimony/devotional and that was cool! I got to use my gifts again while decorating with Kathy for Amore. Spring Fling… well, self-explanatory! I love the youth group so much! I almost feel like it’s my family… and even sheep! I love you all so much, and I would spend my whole life working with this group… and Lord-willing, He’ll let me do that somewhere.

  • U-M Football ~ Yeah, this is a big thing to me! We got to go to 2 games this fall, and it was exciting to see the Wolverines go 10-1 this year! And… it’s not over yet! They will take on the USC Trojans today at 4:30 in the Rose Bowl! I will be watching that! Let’s Go Blue!!!

  • 17th Birthday ~ I had the best birthday ever! We all went out to the beach, played basketball, swam, hiked, and then came back for cake and ice cream. It was a really fun party… but the best part came more towards the end – there was a time of prayer for me, and it was just so… incredible and… warming to hear my friends pray for me! I know they pray for me (or at least they say they do!), but it really amazing to hear them! It was sweet! I love my friends! (have you noticed?)

  • Tech Center ~ I completed my first year there in the Graphic Design class. I really enjoyed it… in fact, I love it so much, I’m back there again as an advanced student! I’ve learned so much through the class, and I really enjoy designing poster, logos, brochures, drawing, etc… Again, I hope I’m glorifying God with my talents He’s given me!

And now for some other top things of the year for me:

  • Song of the Year ~How Great Is Our God by Chris Tomlin (Duh!!!)
  • CD of the Year ~Smile, It’s the End of the World - Hawk Nelson
  • Book of the Year ~ Courageous Leadership by Bill Hybels or Boy Meets Girl by Joshua Harris
  • Verse(s) of the Year ~“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:1-2  or John 1:1-18
  • Things I’ve learned over the Year ~

Leadership

Patience and trust in the Lord

To (Agape) love all

Watch what I say, because words can be twisted

By people who aren’t even trying

Prayer and the Word are my weapons

  • New Year’s Resolution ~ Actually, this year I’m not really making any resolutions! I’ve decided to give the whole year to God; whatever He wants me to learn or do this year, that’s what I’ll do!

Well, I could go on, and on, and on about this year! 2006 will always be remembered! But just think, we’re now one year closer to the return of our Lord! Yesssssss! May that Day come quickly! Remember, keep your eyes on Christ… ‘cause He alone is all that matters!

Happy New Year!

Sam Nelson, Jeff Anderson, or Spiderman
